Earliest meeting: Tuesday 26th December 1865
Final meeting: Monday 4th January 1869
The Worcestershire hamlet of Egdon falls within the civil parish of Stoulton and is located about 4 miles south-east of Worcester. In the mid-19th century, the locals launched an annual programme of steeplechase races held on feast days, the first being on Boxing Day on a course believed to be in the vicinity of the Berkeley Arms. The inaugural meeting took place on Tuesday 26th December 1865, with Mr C Jones, Mr Morton and Mr G Watson acting as Stewards. The starter was Mr C Jones, the Judge Mr P Foxwell and the Clerk of the Course was Mr J Wheeler. The card consisted of 4 races, the first of which was the Farmers Steeplechase. A race for half-breds, the Welter Steeplechase followed, after which the Wolverton Steeplechase over 2 miles took place, with a Scurry Race over a mile completing the day’s action.

This racecourse is not covered in and of the 4 Volumes of Racecourses Here Today and Gone Tomorrow. Ordering details shown below.

It had become a widely publicised, popular event, with crowds flocking to the hamlet from nearby Worcester, but also as far afield as Tewkesbury and Evesham. The course was a challenging one, with several difficult leaps, but although there were a number of fallers, there were no fatalities.

The final record of a meeting at Egdon was on Monday 4th January 1869 when the event was spoilt by inclement weather, with a wretched bout of rain drenching racegoers. This probably dampened the spirits of the organisers and led to them abandoning their dream of holding regular meetings. The course was on the Spetchley road, some 4 miles from the city centre. The organisers comprised of Mr T Shields, Mr J Jackson, Mr T Allington, Mr P Jones and Mr G Day, while overseeing the administration was the secretary Mr Thomas Timmings. Mr W Manton acted as Clerk of the Course, the starter was Mr A V Jones and the Judge was Mr F Drake, presiding over a card comprised of 4 races.
